Elsdale Street Christmas Appeal

Deliver a new “bundle of joy” this Christmas in Kyazanga, Uganda.

For the last 5 years Elsdale St Surgery have been partnering with Joy For Humanity (JFH) to support a local community in Kyazanga, Uganda. Joy For Humanity seeks to support and empower rural villagers, children and family. They do this through health services, education and economic development.

In March 2022 we helped JFH Uganda open a new local health centre in Kyazanga.  In November 2023 three of the Elsdale St team visited the village and took part in a medical camp for 250 women.  (plus many other activities, including introducing Occupational Therapy services to the health centre).

Following the trip to Uganda the Surgery has pledged to partner with Joy For Humanity to support the birth of 150 children born at the Joy For Humanity health centre in Kyazanga.  Normally anti-natal care and a birth would cost a mother £50. For the majority of local mothers this is unaffordable. We have offered to support each mother with a subsidy of £39 so they need only pay £11 (50,000 shillings).  We are assured that every expectant mother in Kyazanga can afford this.

Can you support a mum safely deliver a new bundle of joy this Christmas? We already have 17 mothers requesting our support. Please follow this link and support a baby to safely come into the world in Kyazanga.

Every penny of money donated will go directly to the health centre in support of the mums. No money will be used for administration in the UK or Uganda.

This is part of a bigger project to encourage mothers to engage with anti-natal care to reduce the maternal mortality rate in the District which is one of the worst in the world at 500 per 100,000 births. (in the UK it is 12 per 100,000 births).   We will be collecting data and demonstrating that high quality antinatal care leads to safer births.

To further support JFH Dr Simrit Degun and 11 others will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in neighbouring Tanzania in March 2024. They are hoping to raise £15,000 for the health centre and school.  If you might be interested in joining them do email Simrit using our secure online form. Alternatively you might like to sponsor the team via the Just Giving website. The headmaster from the school in Kyazanga will also be joining the trek up Mount Killimanjaro.

A team led by Elsdale St surgery visit Kyazanga regularly. The next visit is on 24th June 2024 for 11 days. Draft details of visits can be found on the Joy For Humanity website
